The target audience for thriller/suspense movies usually leads to young adults and teenagers. They're also oftern more aimed towards males rather than females. Meanwhile, Psychological thrillers aim towards an older audience often 25 onwards, this is because the confusing twist the movie can take and a younger audience would be overwhelmed by it.
After filming and editing what I thought was going to be my final piece I did like it as much as  I thought. I decided with so little time left I could try and refilm a whole new idea, so that's what I did. My now final piece is based on pedophilia and stocking. The piece consists of a girl who is sleeping and she is having nightmares, the nightmares represent the fear of the girl. The "monster" that appears in her dreams that ends up coming to life is the representation of pedophilia and stocking.

Using suspenseful music

“Great horror movie music doesn’t often win Oscars, but it does stay with us long after the lights have gone up. There’s an art to using suspense music to create terror, dread, and fear.”  For a scary movie there should be a balance between suspense music and horror music. Suspense music is used to build up tension for the revulsion. The most used instruments to create suspense music are string instruments. Synthesizers are commonly used because of their artificial and eerie sound. Synthesizers are also able to hold notes for longer time, that creates the perfect sounds for a suspense. String instruments have been used to create tension and suspense since the movie Psycho (1960).
The human brain can be easily fooled. As the heart rate increases the brain “senses” fear. By raising the tempo the heart rate is easily increased and it adds to the fear factor of the movie.

One of my inspirations for my film opening is the movie Taken. Taken is presented a s a thriller, action film, and crime fiction. My movie opening is going more towards suspense rather than thriller. The differences between a thriller and a suspenseful film are that thrillers work more towards action, sudden events and how the main character will make it alive and well to the next chapter, while suspense works more on building a psychological tension while the action occurs. Alfred Hitchcock dicribes the difference between suspense and surprise by quoting  We are now having a very innocent little chat. Let's suppose that there is a bomb underneath this table between us. Nothing happens, and then all of a sudden, "Boom!" There is an explosion. The public is surprised, but prior to this surprise, it has seen an absolutely ordinary scene, of no special consequence. Now, let us take a suspense situation. The bomb is underneath the table and the public knows it, probably because they have seen the anarchist place it there. The public is aware the bomb is going to explode at one o'clock and there is a clock in the decor. The public can see that it is a quarter to one. In these conditions, the same innocuous conversation becomes fascinating because the public is participating in the scene. The audience is longing to warn the characters on the screen: "You shouldn't be talking about such trivial matters. There is a bomb beneath you and it is about to explode!"In the first case we have given the public fifteen seconds of surprise at the moment of the explosion. In the second we have provided them with fifteen minutes of suspense. The conclusion is that whenever possible the public must be informed. Except when the surprise is a twist, that is, when the unexpected ending is, in itself, the highlight of the story.” (https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/728496-there-is-a-distinct-difference-between-suspense-and-surprise-and) this quote is a great way to describe how I want my audience to feel while watching my film opening. I want to be able to arise questions such as “what’s going to happen next?l

For the filming process I will get the help from my family and from my friends. I am starting to work on my story board to arrange my ideas. I’ve also been researching what type of sound should be included in Horror films. The sounds and music create a specific atmosphere to enhance the emotion the movie is trying to show. Music makes horror movies more enjoyable, music and sounds add up to the overall experience for the audience. Certain sounds allow to highlight certain scenes of importance. Sometimes in horror films only music is able to create the intensity being displayed on screen. The use of instruments like piano or violin create dynamic highlights. In horror films even when there’s nothing on the screen the audience is able to predict what can happen. A horror film without music looses it’s emotion, it looses the feeling of fear. Overall music and sound is a very important part of a horror film to be able to get the full experience of the film.

The horror genre is created by fear, it should be realistic creating fear in things that weren't scary before. Horror is also influenced by suspense, creating the constant feeling of unknowingness of an action. A horror film needs to make the imagination of the viewer work harder than normal. The element of surprise is also very useful in horror films to be able to create the fear the director is aiming for.
Today I brainstormed many ideas, the one I liked the most is a murder in the perfect city. I have many ideas on how to film it but many of them are too complex to do, but I've come to a conclusion that's the one I would like to do. The genre of my film opening would be horror. In horror films, light is a very important factor, one I'm very scared to work with, I feel like one of my weaker sides when it comes to filming is editing, and light falls heavily into that category due to small budgeting in filming.

Hello! My name is Sofia Bustos but I like to be called Sofi. I am a junior in high school and I am taking the class AICE Media Studies. For our final project, we have to create a movie opening from scratch. I am very stressed and confused as to what genre and how to make it. In this blog, I'm going to be posting step by step of my process. I'm very excited yet scared to begin. This project will help me explore my abilities and help me improve my weaker sides. Thank you for reading my blog!
